The biggest news in New Jersey college baseball circles last offseason had nothing to do with a slugger declaring for the Major League Draft or a standout pitcher transferring.
This was all about Phil Cundari moving to Rutgers after 17 seasons as Seton Hall's pitching coach.
"It's probably the most difficult decision I've made career wise." Cundari, who has a masters degree from Rutgers, said at the time.
Cundari has a Seton Hall ladden past, The Cliffside Park native pitched for the Pirates and was a fourth-round draft pick of Oakland. He advanced to Class AA before his career ended prematurely because of an injury.
As a pitching coach, Cundari has few peers. His Seton Hall staff consistently led the Big East, or were near the top, in team earned run average. At Rutgers, he inherited a staff that had a Big Ten-worst 6.11 earned run average as the Scarlet Knights, who haven't played in the NCAA Tournament since 2007, were 19-34. Now Rutgers is 17-11 overall, 4-2 Big Ten record is its best start since it joined the conference, and the team ERA is 4.31.
